Everybody knows a perfect couple when they see them. They might be your neighbors, they could be your friends, and they could even be your relatives. Washing machines and dryers should be a perfect match but when it comes to buying these appliances opposites don´t attract. Today, we´ll be playing the matchmaker by reviewing the cutest couples of 2024.
The best washers and dryers will complement each other in both looks and functionality. There are two main types to consider:
The first is the integrated washer-dryer. These are fitted with an external door which can be attached to your own door panel. Once everything has been fitted, the integrated washer-dryer will disappear behind a door panel until use. If you´re renovating a space, a fully-integrated will match your décor although, they can cost up to $100 to install.
The second type is the freestanding unit. This will likely be how you imagine a washer-dryer. An independent unit, normally with a front facing drum. Freestanding units offer greater choice in terms of drum-size, features and color, but, they will stand out more than their integrated cousins. Freestanding units can either be brought as one, duel washer-dryer or, as a side-by-side as a pair. In our reviews we´ve covered both types to suit all households.

1. LG Turbo Series – Best Washer & Dryer
The power pair is made up of two of LG´s units, the WM4270HWA and the DLEX4270W. The washer has a 4.5 cu. Ft. drum, and the dryer, almost double that with 7.4 cu. Ft.; both are front loading. The two units are an attractive team combining a bright, stainless steel matching finish with advanced technology underneath.
The washing unit is enhanced by LG´s patented 6motion technology. Designed to mimic handwashing, the drum incorporates 6 different types of motion during a wash including scrubbing and swing motions. Suffice it to say, that LG have all the angles covered with washing motions automatically decided by 14 presets. You can even download the progress to your mobile via the LG app.
The dryer more than matches its partner in terms of technology. Sensors are incorporated into the drum to decide when clothes are dry, setting cycle length automatically. It´s a steam dryer with brains, incorporating dial-a-cycle patented technology to help you chose the right settings easier.
Compared to most washer-dryers this duel system operates quietly. That´s thanks to LG´s non-pulley system. They´re equipped with anti-vibration systems, and are both NSF and AAFA certified. The only issues are the universal mobile app on all LG smart devices which can be frustrating to use.
The price is quite high as well, but the advantages of separate units in terms of maintenance and use more than makes up for it.

2. Electrolux White Front Load Laundry Pair
This neat little partnership from Elextrolux is a lot cheaper than the LG series above and it seems that money was saved by forgoing smart technology. It’s a simple washer with no device connectivity. Having said that, it looks smart. Each unit has a large front facing drum colored in, two-tone white and chrome.
The washing element features Electrolux’s much vaunted Smartboost technology. The patented Smartboost premixes detergents with water before the cycle begins. I’m usually suspicious of jingoistic names but, according to Cnet, this really works.
Beyond that, it’s a steam washer with 9 separate washing cycles and a 4.4 cu. ft. drum.
The dryer has a 8 ft cu. Ft. capacity which means you’ll be able to take a full load from the washer straight into the dryer. There are 9 drying cycles to choose from with 5 temperature settings. Overall this is a relatively straightforward pair. Importantly, this partnership is particularly efficient. The EFME617SIW has a steam dry option and an Energy Star Certificate.
In a nutshell, this combination is a simple but effective one. The units are stack-able as well for those who have limited space. It forgoes some of the more fancy technology in favor of a consistent, wash and dry.
- Smartboost technology that really works
- Simple intuitive control cycle
- Energy star certificate
- 4 and 8 cu. ft. wash-dry means you won’t have to use multiple drying loads
- Love the chrome highlights on the drums and the classic white finish
- Reasonably Priced

3. Samsung Stainless Steel Washer & Dryer Set
Similar to LG, Samsung are applying state of the art technology to home appliances. That technology has been added with a focus on speeding up cycles whilst adding convenience. These units are capable of washing loads in half the time of traditional washing machines without sacrificing cleaning power. They´re both wifi connected, allowing you to control the machines, and check on progress, from the comfort of your mobile via an app.
The washer has been made with convenience in mind. It runs quiet thanks to VRT technology and unique drum design. There’s also a sensor to help balance heavier loads. The real stand out feature for me is the add wash. Add wash is a small hatch built into the front facing door that let’s you add clothes to a cycle without having to start it over again. I can see this feature alone saving hours of time as well as energy and water.
The dryer has a 7.5 cu. ft. capacity, offering multiple steam jets to dry clothes quicker without making them crinkly. There’s also 15 drying presets as well as sensors to detect the temperature in the drum. For so much technology, it’s a nice surprise to find that both the washer is a proud holder of an Energy Star certificate.
These units offer fantastic performance individually, the problem comes when you join them up. The dryer has nowhere near enough capacity to match the washers full load. I can see that becoming a real hassle in day to day use. It’s a shame really as every other aspect offers maximum convenience.
- Mobile and Wifi connectivity

- Sleek black matching design

4. LG WM3997HWA – Best All-In-One Unit
The obvious advantage of an all in one unit is space. The LG WM3997HWA has both washer and dryer options without needing it’s own room. The tub is 4.3 cu. ft. and comes equipped with the excellent, 6motion cleaning system. It’s connected to wifi and can be adjusted using just your phone.
A truly inspired feature in this combo washer dryer is the Smart Diagnosis. It means your washing machine work out whats wrong all by itself. When an expensive appliance stops working there’s no end of stress, as you wonder how much repairs will be. I can see this function being a game changer because it takes the worry out of washing machines breakdowns by giving you a clear an accurate diagnosis.
For a single unit, though, this is quite expensive. LG are taking some of the risk out of the investment by offering a ten year limited warranty on their direct drive motor. That’s a serious statement of intent and gives me confidence that this is a well-built machine. It’s also equipped with anti-vibration and lo-decibel technology. The only issue I can see is that for the money, you could buy two twin units. If you’re limited by space but looking for a top class washer-dryer this just might be your best bet.
- Ten Year Limited Warranty
- Smart diagnosis
- Very quiet running
- Lots of patented technology that is only available with LG
- Decent wash space
- Energy efficient with a CEE certification
- Costs roughly the same as a twin unit
- The dryer capacity is limited by using the same drum-size

5. GE UNITIZED SPACEMAKER - Best Combo Unit
The GE unitized series markets itself as an all in one laundry center. The lower half features a 3.2 cu. ft. drum whilst the upper half is a 5.9 cu. ft. dedicated dryer. It’s a middle ground that straddles twin unit and all in one. The benefits of this design are two fold. The first, is that there is enough drying space to take a full load from the washer to the dryer. The second, is that it’s reasonably compact, although a 27 inch width may make it hard to fit in some households.
It’s a fairly basic unit which is reflected in the price. You get eleven different washing options and 4 dry. The auto-load feature is a good addition which measures the weight of a load and applies just the right amount of water saving on consumption as well as energy. It’s also the first top loading washer to feature on our list. In my opinion, top-loaders are just easier to use after a long day, with less bending and stretching involved than on front-loaders.
I can see this being a great product for smaller families. In fact, Consumersearch rated this as a top performing product during their impartial product testing. It’s a simple but functional home appliance that’s available at a very reasonable price.
- The price
- The design is easy to install with separate wash and dry capacities
- The auto-load feature

6. Maytag Maxima XL Series
Maytag is a brand with nearly 150 years experience in home appliances. In 2006, the brand was acquired by Whirlpool who always receive rave reviews from independent review sites. The Maxima series is a combination of the MHW7000AW washer with the MED5500FW dryer. The washer offers a decent 4.3 cu. Ft capacity whilst the dryer nearly doubles that with 7.4 cu. ft.
These are considered sophisticated units when measured against anything but Samsung and LG. And the washer is equipped with Maytag’s patented Powerwash technology. What’s really appealing about this brand though is the commercial parts. Maytag have a rich history in providing appliances to launderettes across the US. They use the same parts on their personal washers which means that you know they´ll last. Maytag are so confident, in fact, that they offer a ten year guarantee on both the motor and the basket.
All of Maytag´s products are made in the US, which will come in handy should you ever need replacement parts. You can also send repairs direct to the manufacturer without too much extra cost. Each unit is fitted with vibration contol as well as a 12 hour fresh hold feature. This keeps warm air circulating through your clothes overnight to keep them fresh.
All in all, it’s a twin unit that promises a long-lasting happy relationship. It doesn’t wash to the same high standards as other units on our list, neither does it have the wow factor that comes with state of the art technology. The Maytag Maxima series is all about reliability and is the safest investment on our list.

7. GE Top Load Washer & Dryer
Not everyone has the budget to go out and buy a state-of-the-art washer-dryer. For those that want convenience on a shoe string the GE top loader is a straightforward pair that promises to get the job done. The washer is GE´s GTW460ASJWW and the dryer is the GTD42GASJWW.
From it´s plain white design to it´s small 700rpm spin. There´s really not alot to get excited by. You will get 14 wash cycles alongside a few useful additions like the deep fill which adds 6 gallons of water for larger loads and auto soak for stained wear. The dryer is vented with a decent 7.4 cu. ft. capacity and 4 drying presets.
This pair is a small investment that´s capable of meeting your laundry needs. A big plus is that these units are made in Louiseville, Kentucky. US manufacture makes life a little bit easier and you know it´s passed all required safety standards before it reaches your home. The installation is easy and picking up this pair won´t burn a hole in your pocket. Simply put, it´s a decent option, well-built with a convenient top load structure. Nothing more, nothing less.
- A good amount of presets for washing
- Auto soak and heavy load features

8. Whirlpool Front Load Washer & Dryer Set
This side-by-side washer-dryer combination is made from Whirlpool´s WFW75HEFW washer and WGD75HEFW dryer. The dryer is available in either gas or electric. Gas is maybe a little trickier to install, but, with an energy saving of up to 50% per load I think it´s worth the extra $100 to go for the gas version.
The models are both compliant with the American Disabilities Association (ADA) which makes it easier to load and unload. Furthermore, these machines have been made with efficiency in mind and receive an Energy Star certificate.
There´s some smart technology in these machines as well. The washer adapts conditions to load via sensors in the drum whilst dripfeeding detergent at select moments to improve cleaning. The dryer also incorporates sensors to adjust drying temperatures depending on load with an in-built eco-boost button for higher efficiency.
The Whirlpool pair maybe slightly more expensive than the GE top loaders above, but it makes the difference up through efficiency. It´s not as cheap in the short-term but significantly cheaper in the long-term. For those reasons it´s joint winner of our best budget option award.
- In-built sensors that adjust consumption to suit the loads
- ADA certified

9. Amana Washer and Dryer Set - Best Budget Option
This set is made up of a top loading NTW4516FW washer and a front loading NGD4655EW dryer. It´s by far the cheapest washer-dryer available on our list and offers serious bang for your buck. The wash basket uses porcelain to prevent clothes snagging and there´s 11 dryer cycles to choose from.
Inside the drums there are in-built sensors that measure loads and adjust water and gas consumption. The washer spins at an impressive 700rpm with a 3.5 foot capacity. For the dryer, there´s a cool-down option that slowly brings your clothes to room temperature which prevents wrinkling.
The only downside here, is the lack of efficiency. It means that, although the initial outlay is low, the running costs over its lifespan will cost you a little more. For that reason it´s vital to invest in the gas dryer for an extra $100 or so. Neither the less, the price for this unit is unbelievable so it takes the other spot on our best budget option award.

Product Considerations for this review
We work hard to produce reviews that will give you an honest assessment of how these products perform. Where we can, we´ve tried to myth-bust as much as possible. That means researching exactly what special features are rather than taking the manufacturers word for it. Every appliance brand will promise that their ´super-wash´technology will give you the cleanest clothes. We ran those promises against consumer reviews, impartial consumer advice guidelines and information available online. Unfortunately, we are not able to test these products ourselves. All the information we´ve used has been linked to encourage you to undertake your own research before buying.
The considerations we made when constructing these reviews was based on user reviews, Energy saving, capacity, and technology.
User reviews
User reviews play an important part in putting these lists together. The products have been drafted based on their sales and high overall scores. From this list we than looked at each product in depth. The advantage of using user reviews is that it gives us a good understanding of how these products perform during normal use, as well as lifespan. Any everyday problems such as poor manufacture can be assessed by confirmed owners.
Energy Saving
One of the drawbacks to owning a dryer is consumption. Which? Tells us that dryers can cost up more than $80 a year in energy costs. Washing machines also use lots of water and electricity when used regularly. When we looked at energy savings we looked for the Energy Star certificate awarded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). We also looked for products with the highest Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE) rating, which is a non-profit organisation that awards marks for low energy consumption. It´s important to note that dryers use a lot of energy and are therefore exempt from the EPA Energy Star award. As a combination the Energy Star award will save you up to $490 in bills over the lifespan of your appliance.
Capacity
The right washer-dryer couple will depend on what you need. If you are a member of a busy household then naturally you´ll need more space. Equally, if you´re from a smaller household there is no need to invest in a large capacity drum. It wouldn´t make sense to consume more energy than you need to. Another consideration is how well the capacity of the washer and dryer complement each other. Generally speaking, a dryer shoud be double the size of a washer. That means that one full wash can be added directly to the dryer. If your dryer is smaller then you have to dry in multiple loads which limits the convenience of owning a washer dryer set.
Technology
Technology doesn´t necessarily mean wifi connectivity, smart apps and lofty price tags. Some of the cheaper washer-dryers on our list are equipped with excellent technology. This comes in the form of auto-sensors that manage water or electric consumption, presets for different loads, or even something as simple as a reversible door. Where possible, we´ve awarded extra points for technology that is convenient or could save you money.
Other Things To Consider
Single unit, Stackable or Side-by-Side
Washing machines come in all shapes and sizes so the first thing to do is pull out your trusty tape measure. The amount of space you have available will obviously narrow your search for the best washer dryer, don't forget to measure depth as well. Once you have a clear idea of what size you need you can choose between a single-unit, a stackable unit or a side-by-side washer dryer.
Single Units
Single units are the go to for those who are limited by space. They´re convenient and easy to install with the ability to provide all your washer-dryer needs. Typically single units are cheaper than duel units although they do come with their own costs.
The biggest drawback of a single unit is capacity. They only have one drum which means the washing and drying capacity will be the same. For every wash you´ll be faced with a choice. Either you halve your wash load to be able to dry straightaway without removing the clothes from the drum or, you´ll have to dry in two separate loads. This limits the convenience of a washer-dryer somewhat.
The other disadvantage of a single unit is maintenance. With everything housed in one space there´s more to go wrong. If you´re dryer short circuits, for example, you´ll no longer be able to do washes. I think this is an important consideration if your opting for a single unit.
Stackable
Most twin units will have a stackable feature. Of course, you´ll need to factor in the higher installation costs if you intend to stack the washer-dryer. These appliances will often vibrate which means installation is not simple a case of putting one on top of the other. Without professional installation a stackable unit can easily become a safety hazard. When you buy, make sure to ask if the frame is included with the units, if not, factor in the added costs of purchasing a frame to house the units. If you have a tall but narrow space, you will have to buy a stackable washer-dryer. We´ve included these details in the specs so make sure to double-check before you buy.
Side-by-Side
There´s a reason the majority of this list is made up from side-by-side units. Simply put, these are the best washer-dryers available for the money. Capacities can be independent of each other which means you´ll get a larger dryer. In additon, if something goes wrong it´s easy to narrow the cause to the washer or dryer feature. Finally having individual units allows for increased specialisation. If you´re thinking of installing a side-by-side allow for each unit to be 2” from the wall with a 3” gap between the units. Typically, side-by-side units are more expensive but make sense as an investment.
In-store checks
I would always recommend purchasing online. You will always find a better deal online with more choice. Even including the delivery fees buying online works out to be cheaper so long as you´re using a trusted seller. The downside of buying online is that you can´t see the unit itself. Why not have the best of both worlds by taking a trip to the store to see the unit then going home and buying online. Here´s a few things to look for when you´re doing instore research.
Check the Door
There´s no shame in getting stuck in and running quick checks in-store. The first one is to open and close the door. It should open easily whilst being firm. The last thing you want is a door that swings easily. That´s an indicator of suspect manufacture.
Drum Opening
The last thing you want is to be stuffing clothes into a washer on a daily basis. Not only that, some clothes could easily get caught and tear. A good rough estimate is to see if the opening is larger than an A4 piece of paper. If it is, you´re good to go. If it isn´t, take a look at some other options.
Get the features you want
It´s easy to be swayed by a good salesman. Before you go in-store look at the features you want and draw up a rough list. If efficiency is important ask if the products are CEE and Energy Star certified. If you want hassle free operation check if it´s a smart device with wifi connectivity. Also if you have specific materials you regularly wash, then make sure you look for those in the presents.
Wrapping up
There´s a great range of washing machines here alongside some useful buyers tips. Always conduct as much research as you can so you have a good knowledge of what you want. When a washing machine offers patented technology, run the titles past websites like Cnet, Which? Or Consumersearch. These websites road test products and will give you an honest review of how effective the technology is, rather than how impressive the technology sounds. As always if you have any questions take a look at our FAQ´s below.
